Menopause, and its predecessor perimenopause, are finally getting their much-needed time in the limelight. Good thing. By learning what’s going on with their bodies, women at least stand a chance of being able to get through it more healthfully and comfortably. Unlike their predecessors, like women my age who didn’t have the internet to educate themselves. However, I can’t help but… When I was in chiropractic practice, a question I asked new patients went something like this: “Given the current trajectory of your health and your habits, what do you think your life will be like in 30 years if you don’t change anything?” It was not uncommon for a 50 year old to look me square in the eye and… I’ve always been an advocate for meeting people where they are and helping them move forward in a simple way. If you have 40 (or especially if you have 100 pounds to lose), you certainly don’t want a healthy weight coach telling you to eat carrots and go for a 6-mile run! Side effects include dark thick chin hairs that appear out of nowhere, blowing up at the kids over dumb stuff, being awake from 2:30-5:30 AM and a rounding belly. It was 4 am and I was lying awake . . .AGAIN! But this time it was different. For weeks before it was almost routine; 2:30 to nearly 6:00 am lying awake, agitated and profusely sweating. Knowing how exhausted I’d be all day because I couldn’t sleep. . .Every. . . single. . . night. But all that had ended… Sally feels out of control: “If only the hot flashes didn’t come at the most ridiculous times! Right in the middle of an important presentation . . . Again! This Peri-menopause stuff just makes me feel so out of control! ”The mood swings; I’m so short-tempered with my kids! My poor son, I blew up him again yesterday over something… Sometimes it’s easier to start simply rather than wait till you have all the answers.
