My friend and business associate Mary Cravets sent this out to her audience earlier in the week. Thanks, Mary! (Such a great win-win!)

Great opportunity for me to expound on this way of eating and tell a client success story.

Simply stated, the components of this diet; less animal foods, more plant foods, and little or no dairy feed the good bacteria in your gut Microbiome.

Those bacteria are responsible for making dopamine, serotonin, and GABA. They all positively affect our moods. And keep our heads clear.

And when you eat more of these foods, you’ll have more of these bacteria and they’ll crowd out others.

The others are responsible for increasing inflammation, and often our cravings for fatty, salty, and sweet foods.

Feed the inflammatory bugs and that, as you might imagine, can get into a vicious cycle.

But what are whole food starches and are there more reasons to eat them?

Whole food starches are among the healthiest foods on the planet.

Most are fairly nutrient-dense.

But here’s the key, they’re Calorie-dilute.

That means you can eat lots of them and not be concerned about gaining weight as you fill your tummy. (An entire pound of potatoes has only 330 Calories! By way of comparison: that’s about the same calories as 4oz. of french fries; 1/4 the amount of potatoes. )

One result is that my clients can stop calorie and carb counting and still lose weight.

My client, Lorna is a great example. Lorna walks with crutches after surviving polio as a child. That makes exercise difficult for her. It also tends to make her less active than others. She spent her lifetime counting calories to maintain weight and going hungry to lose it.

After about 3 months of this approach to eating, Lorna has been able to lose almost 10 pounds. More importantly, she started to realize that she didn’t really need to count calories anymore. She felt satiated with the amount of food she was eating and was still losing weight. (Her name & story are being used with her permission.)

You see, an extra advantage to this way of eating is that thylakoids get all the way down to the colon before they are digested. (Thylakoids are good chemicals in unbroken cell walls, unique to plant foods.) So, they use more calories being digested AND their arrival undigested, in our colon signals to increase production of leptin. That decreases your appetite. (Thylakoids are broken down by grinding grains & overcooking vegetables.)

And here’s the REAL advantage: this means we eat less for as much as 12 or more hours after they arrive in our colon. So, eat oatmeal for breakfast and you’ll likely find yourself still wanting SOME, but less lunch. And eating far less at dinner and not snacking that evening.

So exactly what are whole food starches?

Beans of all types, whole (unpulverized) grains, and seeds like quinoa, brown rice, millet, barley, corn, sweet potatoes, and winter squash to name a few.

The one important thing to mention is minimizing the addition of fats that could quickly counteract the calorie saving. It can also feed the pro-inflammatory bugs.

You can use salsa, marina sauce, or a variety of other nutrient-dense & low calories toppings. Or try mixing your starches with other veggies, or balsamic vinegar. Creamy sauce made with a small amount of nuts, nutritional yeast, and herbs is another alternative.

The possibilities are endless.

Want the recipe for my quick creamy cashew sauce? Email me.

In my next blog, I’ll talk about the connection to more energy.

It’s the first week of January. The new year.

I’m wondering, how are you doing?

I mean how are you REALLY doing?

Are you taking the steps that mean your health will be better next year than it is today?

Unfortunately, in this country, people often wait till a crisis happens to change.

Crises that are often indicated ahead of time by our diet, our lifestyle and the medications we take if we are honest enough to look at it.

So, today I want to talk about someone who decided NOT to wait for a crisis.

Lorna W. is a client that’s unlike most for many reasons.

She had polio as a young child and it left her partially paralyzed. She walks with crutches. This means she can’t exercise very much, making it that much harder to maintain her weight. (And, at the same time, she is starting to exercise a little more. That’s what true commitment will do.)

So, additional weight for her is not about looks. It’s about mobility and longevity.

Together, we tweaked Lorna’s diet enough that she lost the few pounds she wanted to.

But it was more than that.

Lorna’s new plan brought about a change she had never seen before. You see, Lorna always had a sweet tooth. To make matters worse, her husband would often bring home tasty temptations she knew she was better off without. Previously, she would eat them.

And Lorna had another issue too. . .Her husband does a lot of the cooking. And he is a traditional American eater who cooks what he likes.

When she took on this new commitment, it was about weight and mobility at first. Then we dug deeper and discerned it was more than that. It was about being well and relatively pain-free. It was about the self-assurance that the changes she was making now would keep her in sound body & mind; able to do the things she wants for the foreseeable future. At her age, that means a lot.

This newfound commitment to wellness gave her the edge she needed to start saying “no” to all the things that were not investing in her wellness.

The sweets. . .”No thanks.”

The meat on the plate. “I’ll take ⅓ to ½ of that. And none of the creamy sauce.
No, I don’t want the white bread.
No butter on my baked potato, Thank You. But a little salsa would be good.”

She started adding simply prepared veggies, salads, and healthy starches like beans and squash.

Then, several weeks into our working together she said this during one of our sessions:

“. . . I feel empowered to make (food) choices that serve me. I really don’t want to eat the things that aren’t good for me (anymore).”

Then, moving forward through the holiday season she posted on my Vibrant Health Over 40 Facebook Page: (click the link to join the free group)

“I’m excited. I happily got through the holidays. I made lots of good and better choices and didn’t feel like I was missing out.
This is BIG for me. I’ve always struggled with sugar.
Holiday goodies just made it worse.

This year was different. I’ve been using the whole food, plant-based approach to wellness with Dr. Leslie’s guidance for 4 months and found I wasn’t even interested in most of goodies and when I was, I ate VERY moderately.”

So, all this is to say that change doesn’t necessarily need to be radical . . . IF. . .

If you do it before the crisis hits.

If it’s time for you to make that commitment, maybe I can help.

I have a few openings in my schedule for no-cost consultations to help you discern your goals & how to move forward.

Is there a natural approach to the mood swings brought about by hormone surges during peri-menopause and menopause?

The answer is a resounding yes!

Having written those 2 sentences, part of me feels like I’m done & you should just pick up the phone! But I know it’s not that simple.

Since International Mental Health Day was earlier this week, this seemed like a timely thing.

So here’s a little more.

The trick is in quieting down your hormones.

And the magic is in combination of addressing what’s on the end of your fork, your gut microbiome, and more.

Included in the more is also addressing the things in your life that are stressing you out. Surprise. Surprise.

SImply said, it’s not one thing because it’s not caused by just one thing.

In working with clients (and back when I was making my own personal changes as well), I’ve found that addressing those 3 issues, food, the gut microbiome and controllable stresses are the keys for most women.

Working with these issues together, a woman can often see some change in a matter of just a few weeks. Though it does take longer to relearn the patterns of eating, behavior, and response that will bring about a long term permanent change.

And for some, we do need to go deeper. For others, it can take longer because other health issues can complicate matters.

But this is just to let you know that there is a natural approach that doesn’t involve just waiting for it to go away. There is a natural approach that doesn’t involve slathering hormone creams over your body or taking a handful of pills.

It’s an approach that’s about being intentional with how you eat, how you take care of yourself and how you deal with stress.

You can read a little tongue-in-cheek of my own experience here https://www.drlesliek.com/2020/12/30/resolve-menopause-madness/

And set up a time to talk: http://callDrLeslie.com

Weight gain during Peri-menopause is almost universal. Today I talk about the science behind the ketogenic diet and its effect on menopausal symptoms.

How to eat healthy is such a dilemma!

In fact, weight gain during the peri-menopausal years is one of the most common complaints I hear as a health coach. My own story about conquering it and what I learned along the way has been one of my major inspirations for helping others.

So, today I want to look at the keto diet. Is a keto diet healthy or harmful for peri-menopausal weight-loss? It certainly IS a very popular answer.

The main features of a ketogenic diet are high-fat foods and veggies. In it’s purest form that’s it.

You restrict (or eliminate) starches, grains, and fruit. Many say berries are allowable but achieving true ketosis with berries usually means limiting them to a cup or less a day. Then you add lots of fat, meats with the fat left on it, dairy, coconut, avocado, eggs, and more; all to push your body to convert to using fat as a primary energy source instead of sugar.

A true keto diet also involves testing your urine several times per day to make sure you’re maintaining ketosis so your body will burn fat as its primary fuel.

And if you cheat, it usually takes about 2 days before you get back to a ketogenic state. That’s the price you pay for an additional piece of fruit or some crackers; two days of standing still!

My first question is a practical one: how long can you do that for?

Personally, the thought of giving up brown rice, winter squash, sweet potatoes and fruit would send me into a frenzy. Those are some of the healthiest foods on the planet. And some of my favorites as well.

As a reference point, Okinawans, who boast the highest percentage of healthy Centenarians (people who live to 100) in the world, get about 60-75% of their daily calorie intake from sweet potatoes! -Of course, they don’t add butter, sugar and other garbage to them!

Carbos are also comfort foods for many of us. And when you really look at it, it’s not the potato that’s the problem, it’s the company it keeps; the sour cream, butter, bacon bits and more that most typically add to it. But I digress, where talking about keto here.

After that, the next question is NOT “does it work?”

The REAL question is “What does it work for?”

The original discovery of the ketogenic was that it reversed epilepsy in children with seizure disorders. However, there are also reports in the literature of children dying from sudden cardiac death caused by selenium deficiency.

It’s also been well-documented that the ketogenic diet is deficient in at least 17 different nutrients.

But does the fact that it can cure epilepsy in children make it a healthy way for a peri-menopausal woman to lose weight? Or a way to lose weight and fat at all?

Further, can you eat keto and maintain or improve hormones balance and have the energy you need to sustain yourself throughout the day?

And what are the long-term effects of a keto diet? Can it have a long-term positive effect on your health (like eating whole food plant-based can)?

It’s very difficult to maintain a ketogenic diet without eating animal products daily. This means eating high amounts of saturated fats with its negative effect on arterial health and heart function.

Since cardiovascular conditions are already the number one killer in our country already, you might consider:

Do you really want to go on a diet that can increase the chances of you having a heart attack or other adverse cardiac event even beyond what is typical?

And you might also want to be aware that low carb diets, in general, are linked to higher all-cause mortality rates. In other words, all things being equal, a person on a low carb diet is likely to die younger than a person not on a low carb diet.

High animal fat diets are also particularly toxic to the kidneys and the liver. They can also lead to gall stones and increase levels of inflammation in the body. And they are directly implicated in many forms of cancer.

Further, diets high in animal products make it more difficult for peri-menopausal women to maintain hormone balance since they are getting exogenous estrogen from those animal products.

Thus, peri-menopausal symptoms could worsen in some women on ketogenic diets.

So there may be safety, short-term, and long-term factors to consider. And it could make peri-menopause symptoms worse.

Now to the matter of losing weight and more importantly, losing fat weight.

Several studies have compared the fat and lean muscle loss on low-carb diets vs. low-calorie diets. The results might surprise you.

While people on low carb diets lose weight more quickly and perhaps even lose more total weight, it’s well-documented they also lose more lean muscle mass. The title of a 2015 study says it all:

“Calorie for Calorie, Dietary Fat Restriction Results in More Body Fat Loss than Carbohydrate Restriction in People with Obesity.”

My last consideration is about you, as a peri-menopausal woman, having the energy you want and need to make it through the day. The titles of these 2 studies tells it all:

“Blood ketones are directly related to fatigue and perceived effort during exercise in overweight adults adhering to low-carbohydrate diets for weight loss: a pilot study.” In other words: higher ketones in the blood yield higher fatigue levels.

And a more recent study reinforces this point:

“Low carbohydrate, high fat diet impairs exercise economy and negates the performance benefit from intensified training in elite race walkers.”

So, it appears that ketogenic diets also impair energy or, at least the energy needed for exercising.

So there you have it; some considerations to evaluate in regards to high fat, ketogenic diets.

Is there another diet you’d like to get some more factual information on? Comment below and I’ll blog about it soon.

Start Simply & Simply Start

A lot of times, I talk to people about the things they know they need to do for their health and they make such a big deal out of the cacophony of things they ‘should’ do that they never seem to get started. Sound familiar?

I’d like to offer an alternative approach: Don’t commit to never eating a chocolate chip cookie ever again! Don’t tell yourself, “This is gonna be it.”

Just simply take a first simple step: before you go to bed, TONIGHT make sure you have a healthy breakfast available in the morning. I suggest oatmeal. You can even do overnight refrigerator oatmeal. Mix it all up before bed, toss it in the frig & viola! It’s done in the morning!

Now you’ve had a good nutritious breakfast and you can pat yourself on the back for having done something good for yourself (Hint: you CAN eat this if you’re diabetic, and it’s GOOD for you! I’ll explain it all later). Now take it a step further and have a healthy salad for lunch (No, don’t load it up a couple ounces of high fat dressing; just a sprinkle of a high quality of balsamic vinegar.) Pat yourself on the back again and continue your progress.

Maybe you need to clean all the junk that calls your name out of cupboards, dig the walking or running shoes out from the back of the closet or more. Acknowledge what you ARE doing, put plans in place and let that be the fuel for your progress.

And I’ll help you out!

Maybe you know (or suspect) your hormones are off balance, maybe you’re overweight or your out of shape or all of the above.

Beginning October 7th, I’m offering a FREE 5-DAY Jump-Start Your Weight-Loss & Hormone Balance Program. Here’s how it works: When you register, you’ll get a little booklet that will detail a shopping & stocking up guide to help you prepare. Then before the event starts, I’ll also send you out some simple recipes. On October 7th, we hit the ground running, literally and figuratively. Each day, you’ll get a video in your email in-box where I’ll address a key area about balancing hormones without pills and potions, how the world’s healthiest people eat, starting an exercise program and more.

There will also be a private Facebook group where you can get support & ask questions.

This is a plant-based program that is modeled after the way the World’s healthiest cultures eat; a program that is supported by the best science. No, we won’t balance your hormones or reverse disease in 5 days, but we;ll get you’on the road’ and give you ideas and options about where to go from there.

I hope you’ll join me!

In addition, for those of you who are local & want to add a short outdoor aerobic workout to your routine, you can join me for 2 morning hikes & 2 morning bicycle rides in the Los Osos/Morro Bay area, October 7-10. These will be quick 40-50 minute hikes or rides that will start at a designated meeting place promptly at 7:30AM and get you started for your day.

So there I was: 20 lbs. heavier on my slight 5’3” body in just 2 months (and still steadily gaining!). Obviously “bio-identical” hormones was not the answer for me. “Now What?” I asked myself.

It had been a solution that seemed easy; I was having physical symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, etc.); mental-emotional symptoms too (feeling stressed, flying ‘off the handle’ at insignificant things, etc.). Bio-identicals, I reasoned, should be less dangerous than commercial preparations, should have less side-effects, should keep me more even-keeled and handle the physical symptoms as well. A local M.D. who is into “Anti-Aging Medicine” concurred that this was a good choice.

But truth be told, I hadn’t done the research I now recommend my clients routinely do (or hire me to do) to get all the facts on the table before making a decision about medications or procedures. When I later DID the research I found that (1) There is some limited information that suggests bio-identical hormone creams MAY be less hazardous but there are no large research studies proving it is so. (2) There is little or no science to support what is considered to be a ‘therapeutic level.’ (The levels are really only a guess, based on blood tests. However, there is NO level that could be considered correct since peri-menopausal and menopausal women have naturally occurring hormone levels that are far lower than what doctors are trying to achieve to control symptoms.). Thus the amount I was getting MAY have been too high but there was no way to know if lowering it would make a difference or if I’d maybe even continue to gain weight and have the symptoms return too! (3) Research indicates that many of the “minor side effects,” such as the 20 lb. weight gain I experienced, also happen with bio-identical hormone creams.

Long story short, I stopped the therapy. It was also during this time that I made the decision to stop eating poultry and dairy and convert to the whole-food plant-based eating I now recommend to others. Over the next several weeks, my symptoms initially returned when I went off the hormones but then abated, for the most part and I began losing the weight I had gained and my hormone balance began to return.

I also had more “side-effects” of my new diet: (1) My cholesterol level decreased from 205 to 137 in just about 6 weeks. (2) Chronic congestion & post-nasal drip was eliminated when I went off of dairy. (3) The natural hormone balancing effects of being off of dairy and almost all animal feeds (all of which have naturally occurring estrogens) also helped relieve some of the mental-emotional symptoms I was having. (A large portion of this was also related to family & business stressors. This needed to be, and was addressed in other ways.)

I can’t say that losing the weight was easy but I can say it worked. Here are the bullet points of what got me through and what I now recommend and coach others in:

Whole food plant-based eating with emphasis of minimal fats.

Increasing exercise.

Working to restore gut microbiome (thus the hormone balance it brings).

Working on the causes of mental-emotional stress along with the use of meditation or mindfulness strategies.

Eating some specific foods to naturally balance hormones.

Specific tweaks to the diet to keep it low calorie, high energy.

The great thing about all this is that this way of eating is far easier to maintain than a diet like Keto or ultra-low calorie where you’re either starving yourself or changing your diet so much that you can never maintain it. People typically can only sustain keto or other diets over a finite period and often regain the weight afterward. In contrast, this way of eating can become a way of life that is far easier to maintain. At this point, I’ve been eating this way for more than 8 years and have not regained significant weight.

Intrigued about all this? Would you jump in & try it for just 5 DAYS?? NOW; before the holidays & get yourself set up to look FABULOUS this holiday season?! Join my FREE “Jumpstart Your Weight Loss & Hormone Balance” 5 day program October 7-11! You can do ANYTHING for 5 days. Give it a try. Watch for more upcoming info here on my blog and on social media SOON!

We all know that healthy eating and exercise are long term keys to maintaining weight. Still, as we get older, we find it more & more difficult. Most of us have heard of things like the grapefruit diet and many others; some healthy, others; not so much. Well, it turns out that grapefruit is just one of many essential oils known to have a positive effect on metabolism and therefore, weight loss. Today, I’m going to talk about several of these oils, how they work and how you can incorporate them into a healthy weight loss program. In my next blog, I’ll talk more about detoxification and the use of oils that you can use in a bath or diffuser. While most therapeutic or clinical grade oils should not be consumed orally without proper supervision, these are all food-based substances and are reasonably safe.

Grapefruit Oil:

Grapefruit has long been known for its ability to curb cravings, boost metabolism and reduce abdominal fat. It turns out that it contains a compound (nootkatone) which increases production of AMPK, an enzyme important in homeostasis & energy production. (It also turns out that evidence shows both viruses and cancer cells down-regulate AMPK!) Research shows grapefruit oil increases endurances, decreases weight and body fat and more. Diffuse this oil or add a couple drops to drinking water.

Lemon Oil:

Known for enhancing mood and numerous other functions, lemon oil, when combined with grapefruit oil, has been shown to increase lipolysis (the breakdown of fat). Physiologically, it increases norepinephrine which helps with mood, cognitive function & increases muscle metabolism. Use this similarly to and along with grapefruit oil.

Peppermint Oil:

Peppermint has been shown to increase the flow of bile through the digestive track and decrease tension on abdominal muscles. It has also been shown to decrease appetite and in a study significant decreased caloric intake in a population that inhaled it every 2 hours. Use in a diffuser.

Cinnamon Oil:

Cinnamon has been shown to increase the body’s ability to utilize Insulin, thus helping decrease the tendency to store fat. It also has some anti-inflammatory qualities. Use caution with Cinnamon oil as it can burn mucous membranes. It’s safest to dilute it with olive oil or coconut oil as a carrier or to use it in food.

Sweet Fennel Oil:

Fennel has been shown to enhance Melatonin production and thus help with overall metabolism and with the body’s wake/sleep cycles. It was also used on fasting days in ancient cultures. Modern day animal studies showed that test animals ate less food when given fennel.

Today, I want to tell you a couple of quick stories of people who made small changes that helped address chronic inflammation and how these changes changed their life. (All names have been changed.)

Beverly is a client that, despite being obese had an active lifestyle that including skiing, tennis and other sports. But throughout the years she had had numerous injuries that resulted in chronic pain. Still, she was committed to maintaining her lifestyle and finding a way to diminish pain & inflammation without the potential negative effects of medication. I suggested a program that included Ameo’s Frankincense Essential Oil, various supplements and detoxification & weight loss. Bev decided to go with the Frankincense alone. (She didn’t want to give up any of her favorite foods & was convinced she actually felt better at her current weight.) Amazingly, just that, by itself made enough of a change that, although she wasn’t able to ski or play tennis, she had less pain and was able to be more active than she had been in the recent past .

Melinda is a young adult (mid-20’s) that was having some health challenges as a result of her poor diet and lack of exercise throughout her teenage years and into young adulthood. Blood tests revealed she was pre-diabetic. She had constant digestive distress, pain in many joints, possible gall bladder issues and knew she had to make a change. Adding Zija’s Smartmix, AGX Digest and making better food choices made an incredible difference. In a matter of just a couple of months, her digestive and gall bladder issue were resolved, her blood tests returned to a healthy range, pain was gone, she had more energy & felt healthier and she lost about 20 lbs.

Michael was a morbidly obese middle aged man who was diabetic, had fatty liver disease and was in constant pain. He knew his very life hinged on the need to make some major changes. He added Zija’s Supermix, Premium Detox tea and more fresh fruits and veggies to his diet. He has eliminated junk food, most dairy and some meat. He has lost almost 60 lbs and is now able to be a little more active. His blood tests have shown improvement after just a few months. Michael still has a long way to go to undo the damage caused by years of toxicity and inflammation. At this writing, he is still, unfortunately, in some pain but as he continues to build muscle, lose fat and decrease inflammation, he is beginning to see more positive changes. He is optimistic that he will be able to resume many activities soon.

These 3 clients illustrate how making changes that decrease inflammation can result in quick improvements in people’s lives and in their health profiles.

We now know that chronic inflammation is a contributing part to almost any chronic disease you can name. So squelch chronic inflammation and you will live healthier and pain-free for many more years!

What contributes to Inflammation? The Biggies:

The 5 white poisons: White flour, white rice, white sugar, dairy, GMO Soy

Processed foods: food with the above but also artificial colors, preservatives, chemicals and vegetable oils

Animal foods; especially high animal fat foods

Over the next few blog entries, I’ll be talking about ways to decrease inflammation.

Today we introduce Moringa olifera! Superfood of Superfoods

When I started adding the Moringa found in Zija International’s Smartmix and Supermix, something amazing happened. I found that my nearly 60 year habit of night time munching was getting under control! Many aches & pains disappeared and my energy level improved as well. A few weeks later, I had lost 7lbs without really even trying and went on, using Zija’s additional products, to lose a total of 15lbs. Give the body what it needs & it doesn’t suffer from cravings! I’ve kept that off for an year and recently started working on the last 10lbs!

With 36 different anti-inflammatory compounds; Moringa is a powerhouse when it comes to decreasing inflammation. This 3 minute animated is much easier than reading! :

Over a period of several months last year, I lost 15 lbs and got down to a weight I was very excited about. Here’s the interesting part, I lost about the first 5-7 lbs. without really even trying! How did that happen?

If there were a single, readily available food source that contained 46 Anti-oxidants, 36 Anti-inflammatory compounds, all 20 amino acids, more calcium than milk, more iron than spinach, more vitamin C than oranges, fat- and water-soluble vitamins, Omega 3-6-9’s AND MORE, do you think there’s a chance that getting all that nutrition daily might help diminish cravings? Well, there is and, at least for me, it did.

Zija International’s Moringa olifera-based mixes are what is making this difference for me and thousands of others world-wide. In just 10 short years in the industry, Zija has had an incredible impact on what it is now calling the Natural Health Revolution. The Revolution is about getting people to eat better, sleep better, move more, diminish stress and turn away form the drugs, chemicals and fast foods that wreaking havoc on our lives and on our health. And it all starts with, believe it or not, something as simple as a powered drink mix.

For me, now that I’ve done that, I see the real possibility of dropping a few more pounds and getting down to what a weighed in college (which was actually less than what I weighed in high school.) Over the next several weeks, I’m going to write more about the additional products I used and the changes I made in hopes of inspiring YOU! “Whatever you desire. . .begin it now.”
